President Ladany shows support for DACA students, joins call for action

Oglethorpe University President Nick Ladany continued to stand by the Oglethorpe students and students across the country whose immigration status is covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The U.S. Court of Appeal for the Fifth Circuit released its decision Oct. 6, 2022, in the Texas v. United States case affirming a lower court’s ruling that DACA was illegal but stayed the results pending a review by the district court in light of a new rule by the Department of Homeland Security.

“I stand with our students at Oglethorpe who follow with great interest and investment every legal step in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) case. I add my support to the more than 550 higher education leaders in the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration to call on Congress to move quickly to protect the 600,000 directly affected by this ruling.”

The Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration issued a joint message today calling on Congress to pass legislation to protect those with DACA status and others who may have been unfairly locked out of the program. That release is available on the Alliance’s website.
